Conservation Projects Officer (Asia Region) (full-time)

The World Land Trust is an international conservation charity, working to protect threatened habitats around the world. Due to recent organisational growth and subsequent expansion of the Trust's international conservation programmes, a new position has become available within the Conservation Projects Team to assist in the development and management of projects with primarily a geographical focus on Asia.

The successful applicant will be enthusiastic about wildlife conservation, highly organised and an excellent communicator with a good sense of diplomacy.  He/she will have:

  • A bachelors degree (or  equivalent) or higher in a subject relevant to wildlife conservation, habitat conservation and natural history;
  • At least one years experience in a management position, ideally related to conservation and/or the voluntary sector;
  • Ideally, some work experience within Asia, and good knowledge of the region;
  • Excellent knowledge and experience of using Microsoft Office Suite (experience of any other computer packages would be an advantage);
  • Excellent communication skills, and experience in giving presentations and public speaking;
  • An excellent standard of English, both written and spoken.

The position would be full time (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm), although may require working outside general office hours on occasion, when time off in lieu can be taken. The position will be based in the World Land Trust's offices in Halesworth, Suffolk, although some travel within the UK will be necessary, and possibly some overseas travel may be required. Annual leave will be 20 days p.a. exclusive of public holidays.

Starting Salary: £13,000 p.a. (subject to experience)

Job Description

Job Purpose

The position of the Conservation Projects Officer (Asia Region) focuses on the day-to-day support for and on-going development of the Trust's conservation projects with primarily a geographical focus on Asia. The Conservation Projects Officer (Asia Region) will work in tandem with other members of the Conservation Projects Team, and will assist the WLT's Conservation Programmes Manager (CPM) to develop, implement and manage the Trust's international conservation / land purchase programme.

Main Activities

  • Provides day-to-day administrative and project management / development support for WLT's conservation / land purchase projects, carrying out 'within project' tasks as assigned;
  • Primary point of contact for all matters relating to conservation / land purchase projects with a geographical focus on Asia;
  • Management of and primary point of contact for all matters relating to WLT's UK projects.

Duties and responsibilities

Project Management:

  • Responsible for project administration and development of projects with a geographical focus on Asia;
  • Responsible for project administration and development of WLT's UK-based projects (Kites Hill and NGO Book Programme);
  • Assists CPM on project co-ordination, carrying out 'within project' tasks as assigned;
  • Responsible for responding to conservation-related communications and inquiries (relating to Asia), including initial requests for support;
  • Assists CPM in assessment of new projects against WLT criteria;
  • Fundraising - writing project proposals and assisting CPM on specialist funding applications;
  • Administration of project-related meetings, including organisation, scheduling, minute-taking, etc;

Information Management:

  • Providing project-related information for WLT Staff and Trustees, including writing of project briefs, website updates and projects reports;
  • Assisting with organisation and creation of presentation materials as appropriate;

Staff & Intern/Student Assistance:

  • Assisting CPM and Education Officer in the organisation of Study Tours & Field Excursions for project partners and students, with a geographical focus on Asia;
  • Assisting and liaising with Interns and UEA Diploma students in project selection and development, and other duties as assigned;
  • Assisting CPM and Education Officer in arrangement of projects for UEA MSc students, with a geographical focus on Asia, including provision of project information;
  • Assisting with events as agreed in advance;
  • Representing WLT at symposia and meetings where appropriate;
  • Representing CPM and/or CEO at functions as requested;
  • Back up for CPM and/or CEO on actions, meetings and tasks to be done, as appropriate;
  • Handling own/personal and conservation team's general administrative and secretarial work;

The position is full-time, based in the World Land Trust's offices in Halesworth, Suffolk, although travel within the UK will be necessary, and possibly some overseas travel may be required. From time to time you will be asked to assist with general office duties, in situations of heavy workload, staff sickness or holidays. You will also be asked to work outside general office hours on occasion, when time off in lieu can be taken.
